The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey took requests back in 2009 for pieces of structural steel salvaged from the World Trade Center to be used in public memorials. Fire and Police officials, selectmen and residents submitted a letter to the port authority to request two pieces of the steel for a new memorial to be built in front of Acton’s public safety building. The new design incorporates the previous memorial into the new one. It honors the victims in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
The memorial cost over $60,000. The project was paid for by donations and fund-raising.
The old memorial honors Acton residents Amy Sweeney and Philip Rosenzweig who were both on American Airlines Flight 11,now the new memorial recognizes public safety personnel. With the help of the Sweeney and Rosenzweig families along with the 9/11 Committee and an Engineer from Stamski and McNary we came up with a design that we all felt will be welcomed into the community. It brings a piece of history, reflection and dignity home to Acton.
The Ground Breaking took place on September 11, 2010 and was completed before and dedicated on September 11, 2011. This was the ten -year anniversary of the horrible day.
